Flip Screen: A Launch Into 2019

Do you know this one blog with a title like this?

– Possibly Scott Pilgrim

Two months ago, I sent Ell a proposal. This proposal was somewhat wild and happens to be one of a growing number of impulsive decisions on my part. Yet despite the numerous in caps messages I sent her over several days, she said yes. Thus, Flip Screen was born.

Over the past two months, Ell and I have been working hard on getting this website off the ground. This started with deciding on a name (which is way harder than I expected, and I genuinely do not know how parents of tiny humans do this) before then deciding on a logo which reflected on the site we wanted to create. As soon as that was in place, it was time to build our team.

Building our team has been a dream, quite frankly. We have managed to create an ever-growing team with strength and flair that I’m sure is going to make Flip Screen better than we could have ever imagined, and I’m honestly very excited to see just what exactly they all bring with our launch!

So without further ado, as we wade our way into the new year we thought now would be the perfect time to launch Flip Screen! And to officially kick things off, I started by asking the ever-lovely Ell what she was excited about for 2019!

Short Term 12 (2013)

What has been the best thing you have watched in 2018?

Ell (@ell_hof): Oh, that’s a hard question. In 2018 I made it a little goal to focus mostly on scratching movies off my “to watch” list or to work through people’s filmography. One thing led to another, though. While instinctively I’d say Disobedience, Lady Bird, I, Tonya, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women or Suspiria I think the truest answer would be Short Term 12. It’s a fantastic indie-movie from 2013 starring Brie Larson (and to my surprise, Stephanie Beatriz ). I hadn’t heard about it before stumbling across it while looking for Unicorn Store (Brie’s directional debut) and took me by absolute surprise! It’s brilliant and the best I’ve seen this year.

What is something you are looking forward to watching in 2019?

Ell: The first movies I’ll be seeing in 2019 are Widows and Into the Spider-Verse! I’m also looking forward to seeing Colette in theaters. Mary Stuart, Joy, Captain Marvel, Welcome to Marven …

What do you want to achieve in 2019?

Ell: I want to watch more movies and write about them, too. Besides Flip Screen I’ve also an Instagram (10th.land) set up to start with my first movie of 2019 which I hope will function as some sort of log for the movies I’ve seen (whether I’ve enjoyed them or not). On a more professional front, I have three short films in planning for the next couple of months alone. They’re part of the application for film school (good luck to me).

What do you achieve with the launch of Flip Screen?

Ell: The original intent to say “yes!” to Georgia’s suggestion as to start a blog together was to have an outlet to post essays and reviews, simply for the practice of it, as well as to have different point of views on films and tv shows. But through the last couple of weeks alone it’s become more and more obvious that the simple conversation about these things is so fulfilling in and of itself. It really boosted my confidence and motivation for this little project to take off, hearing so many people interested not only in what we wanted to say but most of all, their desire to share their opinions, too! I’m excited, my friends, I really am.

I also posed the same question to our current team of Staff Writers, and here are some of their responses:

Laura: Drawing more often, going to the movies more often and spending more time with friends.

Daisy: To explore my career options as a budding screenwriter and graduate from university without too much stress!

Alissa: I want to continue writing as frequently as I have in 2018 to improve my skills; read more books; and tick more shows off my terrifyingly long “to-watch” list .

What do you achieve with the launch of Flip Screen?

Shaun: The chance to write regularly about subjects I am passionate about.

Antonia: With the launch of Flip Screen, I finally have a medium to voice all the opinions I didn’t know how to voice before.

Ryder: Exploration into film through varying lenses.

Helena: Just to be a part of the editing team is a fab opportunity to practice professional editing.

Laura: Writing not only for and by myself but for “something bigger than me”, exchanging ideas and thoughts with people that have similar interests.

Daisy: I want to improve as a blog writer and share my thoughts and interests regarding film and television with like-minded people, as well as introduce myself to new films and TV shows.

Alissa: I want to play a part in creating a vibrant, dynamic, and engaging platform where women and LGBT+ people get to share their views and see their voices elevated.
